For a long time, the Alps in Europe posed challenges for transportation and trade, particularly in Switzerland where most traffic passed through without stopping. To address this, Switzerland began investing in infrastructure improvements. In 1980, the Gotthard road tunnel was constructed to facilitate truck movement, but it led to increased traffic and safety concerns. In response, Switzerland implemented new regulations in 1994 to enhance safety in the Alps. The New Rail Link through the Alps (NRLA) project, initiated in 1992, aimed to create safer transportation routes. This project resulted in the construction of two major tunnels, the Gotthard Base Tunnel and the Lotschberg Base Tunnel, which offered safer and more efficient passage through the Alps. The Gotthard Base Tunnel, completed in 2016, became the world’s longest train tunnel and significantly improved transportation reliability. Additionally, the opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel in 2020 marked the completion of the NRLA project, further enhancing travel safety and efficiency in Switzerland’s Alpine region. These developments have made traveling through the Alps in Switzerland easier and safer for both passengers and goods.
