Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has appointed his longstanding economic advisor, Mohammed Mustafa, as the next prime minister amid pressure from the United States to reform the Palestinian Authority following the conflict in Gaza. Mustafa, an economist educated in the United States known for his political independence, faces the challenge of assembling a new government for the Palestinian Authority, which holds limited authority in certain areas of the West Bank. Abbas tasked Mustafa with developing plans to reunify administration in the occupied West Bank and Gaza, implementing reforms in government, security services, and the economy, as well as combating corruption.
