Reports indicate that Muhammad Aurangzeb, on the verge of assuming the role of Pakistan’s finance minister, is prepared to relinquish his monthly salary package of Rs30 million and Dutch citizenship, signaling his commitment to serving in this crucial position.
Sources close to Aurangzeb reveal that he has initiated the process of renouncing his Dutch citizenship in anticipation of his appointment. Despite Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif not yet announcing his cabinet, Aurangzeb has engaged in discussions with Nawaz Sharif of the PML-N party, indicating his readiness for the role.
Currently serving as the CEO of Habib Bank Limited (HBL), Aurangzeb recently participated in the inaugural finance meeting with the new Prime Minister, during which former finance minister Ishaq Dar was notably absent. The absence of Dar suggests that his return as finance minister is unlikely.
Aurangzeb’s willingness to forfeit his dual citizenship aligns with Pakistani law, which prohibits individuals with dual citizenship from holding public office. Notably, he ranks among the top five highest-paid bank CEOs in Pakistan, commanding an estimated monthly salary of around Rs3 crore.
Aurangzeb’s decision underscores his dedication to public service and his aspiration to contribute to Pakistan’s economic prosperity from a position of leadership within the government.
