India is reportedly considering the exclusion of Virat Kohli from their ICC T20 World Cup 2024 squad, scheduled to be held in the USA and West Indies from June 1.
Following India’s disappointing exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup with a crushing 10-wicket defeat against England in the semi-final, Kohli remained absent from T20I matches for over a year.
Despite making a comeback to the shorter format earlier this year alongside Rohit Sharma in a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan at home, Kohli’s performances were underwhelming. While Sharma participated in all matches, scoring a half-century in the third match, Kohli appeared in only two matches, with scores of 0 and 29 runs.
Sharma’s presence in the 2024 World Cup is assured, as announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah, who declared the 36-year-old as the team’s captain. However, the situation appears uncertain for Kohli, despite his notable contributions as India’s standout player in recent T20I tournaments.
The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is contemplating dropping Kohli from the squad, believing that the 35-year-old may no longer possess the necessary attributes for the shorter format. With India’s ICC tournament drought since 2013, the selection committee aims to make a decisive move, with Kohli potentially bearing the brunt of this decision.
