Pakistan encountered a significant setback when Zohaib Rasheed, a boxer who had clinched a bronze medal in Asia, mysteriously disappeared in Italy. The incident occurred during a boxing event hosted by Italy for the Paris Olympics at the Busto Arsizio Arena near Milan. Zohaib went missing from the hotel where the team was lodged on a Saturday, leaving behind some belongings but taking others with him. Initially, he had indicated he would train upstairs due to the cold, but failed to meet up with his teammates as planned. Taking his passport and securing the room key from the hotel reception, Zohaib’s disappearance was promptly reported to the police by the head coach, who provided all relevant details and his photograph. Zohaib’s absence cast a shadow over his scheduled bout in the 51kg category, seen as Pakistan’s prime opportunity for Olympic qualification this year. The Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) alerted event organizers about the situation, but sadly, Zohaib’s vanishing act echoes past incidents where Pakistani athletes disappeared during international competitions. Despite the setback, the PBF remains committed to supporting talented athletes like Zohaib, who had shown promise with notable performances in previous championships, including winning medals in the Asian Under-22 and Asian Senior Championships.
