The father of a six-year-old boy who tragically fell to his death into an uncovered manhole has filed a lawsuit against the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) for their negligence, which resulted in the accident. Atifuddin has initiated legal action before a senior civil judge (East) seeking Rs62.6 million in damages from the KWSC and KMC following the passing of his son, Abyanuddin. The incident occurred on May 6, 2023, in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area when the boy accidentally fell into the open manhole while playing cricket. The plaintiff has named the KWSC’s chief executive officer and the KMC municipal commissioner as defendants in the lawsuit. He detailed that his son, along with his elder brother Arifuddin and other children, was engaged in a game of cricket when he slipped while catching the ball, leading to his tragic fall into the open manhole. Despite immediate efforts from nearby residents to rescue the boy, the swift water flow prevented his retrieval from the hazardous depths of the manhole. The plaintiff expressed disappointment over the KWSC’s response, noting inefficiency and a lack of coordination in their rescue efforts. He lamented the prolonged duration his son remained trapped despite the involvement of both residents and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation in the rescue operation.
